About me

Verity Vinen Counsellor
Approach

My therapeutic approach and philosophy is based upon an Integrative framework of Humanistic values of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I respond to each client in an individual and unique way, drawing upon Person-Centred, Gestalt and Existential theory. I am non directive and take a holistic view of my clients, encouraging wholeness of experience.

As your counsellor, I am here to develop trust, offer acceptance, empathically listen without judgment, and help you experience a deeper understanding of your feelings (or absence of them.) I help you move towards greater autonomy and encourage personal responsibility.

I sometimes use creativity to explore feelings, and may offer drawing, painting, clay/stonework and sand tray to encourage connection with emotions; however, my clients are always free to choose and I follow their pace and direction in every session.

"Healing starts by looking at the whole person and appreciating all the good that is there”

(Boutwood, 2007)

I believe that we have the capacity and potential to live a fulfilled life but sometimes we experience ‘stuckness’ and difficulty flourishing individually or in our relationships, which can be painful and bewildering.

My clients often come to counselling having felt stuck for longer than they can remember, and perhaps seeking support for the first time. It takes courage to get to this point.

Life can throw all manner of challenges and it is sometimes hard to make sense of things. Feelings of deep unease, low self esteem and disconnection can affect our thinking, emotions, physical health and wellbeing. We may feel isolated due to an absence of support, time or a confidential setting to share our concerns.

You may come to counselling finding it difficult or even painful to articulate or name the problem. The feeling that "something is just not quite right” is often where we start on our journey together.

Together, we will explore your unique personal struggle in a safe and confidential way. Through establishing trust and working collaboratively, the counselling process will help relieve your distress as you discover insight and find new ways of looking at your situation.

My hope is for you to find and courageously use your inner resources to embrace fears and vulnerabilities. In doing so, you will experience greater authenticity and resolution. Finding that you have the choice to change your view of your situation can be liberating.
